October 3rd, 2024, marks two significant milestones: the 55th birthday of the Berlin TV Tower and Germany’s National Day of Unity. Standing tall at 368 meters, the Berliner Fernsehturm has been an iconic symbol of Berlin and a testament to German engineering since its completion in 1969.
Designed by German architect Hermann Henselmann, the Berlin TV Tower began as a statement of technological and socialist progress during the GDR era. Construction started in 1965, and by October 3, 1969, it was unveiled to the world. Broadcasting GDR television in color for the first time, the tower became a central communication hub and a towering symbol of East Berlin. As the highest structure in Germany, the Berlin TV Tower stands as a lasting symbol of both Berlin’s divided past and its reunification. It’s fitting that its anniversary coincides with German Unity Day, a day that commemorates the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990.
Today, the tower is much more than a broadcasting landmark; it’s a beloved tourist attraction. Over one million visitors each year ascend to its observation deck at 203 meters, where they are treated to 360-degree panoramic views of Berlin’s most notable landmarks. Berliners, Germans, and international visitors alike flock to the tower, making it a true cultural icon.
To celebrate its 55th birthday, the Berlin TV Tower offers a unique culinary experience before its Sphere restaurant reopens fully in 2025. Michelin-starred chef Tim Raue has crafted a special anniversary menu called “Damals, Heute und Zukünftig” (“Then, Today, and In Future”), offering a taste of Berlin’s rich culinary history. From the traditional Spreewälder Gurken to contemporary delights, the menu promises to be a feast for the senses—207 meters above the city.
We are proud to have the Berlin TV Tower as a distinguished member of the World Federation of Great Towers and congratulate the tower on behalf of all our members for reaching this incredible milestone!
