Sydney Tower Rejoins the World Federation of Great Towers!

A Tower Above the Rest

The World Federation of Great Towers (WFGT) is thrilled to officially welcome the Sydney Tower back into our global family of iconic landmarks! Standing tall at 309 meters (1,013 feet), this architectural icon has been an integral part of Sydney’s skyline for over 30 years, offering breathtaking views and unforgettable experiences to visitors from around the world.

An Icon of Engineering and Innovation

The Sydney Tower isn’t just a stunning part of the city’s skyline, it’s a seriously impressive piece of engineering. Designed by architect Donald Crone and engineered by Alexander Wargon, the tower took six years to complete before officially opening in September 1981. At the time, it was the tallest observation tower in the Southern Hemisphere. Known by many names (Sydney Tower Eye, Centrepoint Tower, Sydney Skytower, and more), this incredible structure is not just Sydney’s tallest tower, but also one of the safest buildings in the world! Thanks to its 56 stabilizing cables and a structure built to withstand extreme weather conditions, Sydney Tower was designed to stand strong against anything nature throws at it. Construction began in the late 1970s, with the first phase, Centrepoint shopping centre, opening in 1972, followed by an office complex in 1974. Finally, after years of careful planning and construction, the Sydney Tower officially opened its doors to visitors.

So, what makes this tower so impressive? Its core is built from 46 giant concrete sections, each weighing around 27 tonnes. These were carefully stacked like building blocks to create the tower’s solid foundation. Meanwhile, the upper section, the part that houses the observation deck and restaurants, was actually built on the ground and slowly lifted into place as the tower rose higher!

The Sydney Tower was also designed to stand strong against earthquakes and extreme wind conditions. The 56 steel cables that anchor the structure help keep it stable, ensuring it remains a safe and secure landmark for visitors. The Sydney Tower is a landmark that continues to amaze visitors and engineers alike!

Unparalleled Views from the Top

Perched 250 meters (820 feet) above Sydney’s bustling streets, the Sydney Tower Eye offers visitors a 360-degree panoramic view of the city’s vibrant skyline. The indoor Observation Deck is equipped with interactive touchscreens and high-powered binoculars, enhancing the experience and allowing guests to spot landmarks and learn about Sydney’s rich history.

For those seeking an extra thrill, the SKYWALK adventure awaits. This open-air, glass-floored platform encircles the tower at a height of 268 meters (879 feet), providing a unique perspective of the city below. During this 60-minute guided experience, participants can look down through the glass floor, feeling as though they’re walking on air, while learning about Sydney’s iconic landmarks from knowledgeable guides. Fun Fact: Sydney Tower is home to the second tallest post box in the world, where you can send postcards from 250 meters up in the sky!

Dining in the Sky

The Sydney Tower isn’t just about the views, it’s a culinary destination as well! The tower is home to three incredible dining venues, a stylish cocktail bar with unbeatable skyline views named Bar 83, a buffet experience featuring flavors from around the world called SkyFeast, and lastly, Infinity, the tower’s fine dining restaurant offering a luxurious sky-high experience
