Today, Rotterdam’s skyline sparkles a little brighter as we commemorate the 64th birthday of the Euromast, a towering emblem of the Dutch city’s ingenuity and charm. Standing tall at 185 meters, this architectural marvel has stood the test of time, enchanting visitors with its panoramic views and rich history.
The Euromast was born from a vision to showcase Rotterdam’s vibrant spirit and cosmopolitan flair to the world. As the host city of the Floriade (the international exhibition and garden festival), Rotterdam sought to leave a lasting impression on visitors, and what better way to do so than with a towering symbol of innovation and progress? Built between 1958 and 1960, the tower was designed as a nod to the city’s maritime heritage. The Euromast was conceptualized and brought to life by visionary architects Hugh Maaskant, A.J. van Neste, R. Swart, and a team of dedicated engineers and builders. The tower’s inauguration on March 25th, 1960, marked a momentous occasion for Rotterdam, as it unveiled a monumental structure that would soon become an integral part of the city’s fabric. The tower boasts a concrete structure with an internal diameter of 9 meters and a wall thickness of 30 centimeters, ensuring its stability and durability. Its foundation rests on a concrete block weighing a staggering 1,900,000 kilograms, ensuring the tower’s center of gravity remains firmly grounded.
Stretching skyward to a towering height of 185 meters, the Euromast reigns supreme as the tallest building in the Netherlands. Originally standing at a modest 101 meters upon its completion, the addition of the Space Tower in 1970 propelled the Euromast to new heights, solidifying its status as an unrivaled observation tower. From its lofty vantage point, visitors are treated to breathtaking views of Rotterdam’s picturesque skyline, a sight that never fails to captivate and inspire. Visitors can reach the observation deck and brasserie via two high-speed elevators, capable of whisking them to a height of 100 meters in just 30 seconds. For thrill-seekers, the Euromast offers the exhilarating opportunity to abseil or zip-line from its lofty heights, reaching speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour.
You can visit the Euromast from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. – get your tickets here: https://euromast.nl/en/buy-tickets
