Tonight, on May 8, 2025, the skies above Prague will be illuminated in a unique and powerful tribute to peace.
To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe, Prague’s iconic Žižkov Television Tower, a member of the World Federation of Great Towers, will launch a laser beam high above the city. The laser, officially activated by Czech President Petr Pavel, will shine brightly from just after 10:00 p.m., visible from many vantage points across the capital and its outskirts.
This one-of-a-kind installation is more than a spectacle, it’s a statement. Organizers describe the laser as a symbol of remembrance, honoring the countless lives lost and serving as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of war. It also projects a forward-looking message of peace, hope, and unity across Europe.
Ideal viewing locations for this remarkable display include high points such as Petřín Park, Letná, Hradčany, and Vítkov Hill, where the entire silhouette of the tower is visible.
The tribute continues throughout the week. From May 8 through May 18, the Žižkov Tower will host a commemorative program inviting visitors to explore the tower’s history through daily guided tours. Tours will be conducted in Czech at 10:00, 13:00, 15:00, and 16:00, and in English at 11:00, 14:00, and 17:00.
Guests can also enjoy a special anniversary menu at the Oblaca bar and Miminoo restaurant, with themed cocktails crafted for the occasion.
The launch of this laser system marks a new chapter for the Žižkov Tower, blending technology, art, and cultural memory in an unforgettable way. As this powerful beam lights up the sky, it becomes a new symbol of Prague, and a global reminder that peace must never be taken for granted.
