Tower Story

Kuantan 188, standing tall on the banks of the Kuantan River, is not only the latest iconic landmark of Pahang’s first city but also sets the night and weekend mood of Kuantan, the capital city of Pahang on the East Coast of Malaysia.

Since its official opening on February 21, 2021, the tower—designed with a tapered profile to symbolize the old Malay weapon of the spear, echoing the tip of the spear in Pahang’s coat of arms—has attracted a steady stream of visitors. Many come to experience the second tallest lookout tower in Malaysia, which is also the tallest tower in the East Coast Economic Region (ECER). From the top, Kuantan 188 offers sweeping views of the South China Sea, mangrove biospheres, the Kuantan River, the city itself, and the local fishermen’s activity center.

During the day, the tower is a striking sight, while at night it illuminates with colorful lights, shining over Kuantan Waterfront. Visitors who ride the East and West glass elevators are treated to panoramic views of Kuantan city before reaching the tower porch, which was designed to resemble the leaves and flowers of the Teruntum plant (Lumnitzera racemosa), once abundant along the Kuantan River.

The tower’s location is also strategic, surrounded by attractions within walking distance such as Kuantan Art Street, Taman Kerang, rows of old shops along Jalan Besar, and Kuantan Waterfront with its giant “KUANTAN” sign—white during the day and glowing in color at night.

Developed by the federal government through the East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC) in collaboration with the Pahang government, construction of Kuantan 188 began in August 2017 and was completed with a Certificate of Completion and Compliance in November 2020.

Kuantan 188 is expected to serve as a catalyst for boosting tourism and attracting investment in the surrounding areas. With its unique design and various planned activities, the tower holds strong potential to draw both locals and foreign visitors, strengthening Kuantan’s role as a vibrant destination.
